SND Handout

I thought this reading about Julie Billiart and Francoise Blin de Bourdon was very interesting. As I was reading this handout I felt like I knew what was going on in their lives as it progressed. One thing that I found interesting with Francoise is that it stated her father considered himself atheist. I kind of found that ironic that she is a sister and he was an atheist. Another thing that I found interesting was food was very important during this time. They considered a great meal to be one of the best things for your body and soul. Something that was odd to me is that she decided to choose the life of virginity. This wasn't the odd part though, the odd part was that she wasn't sure if she even wanted to become a nun. Usually it is associated that if you want to be a virgin then you are usually a nun but in this case Francoise was still unsure.
Julie Billiart was different on the other hand and was part of what was known as the "third estate." This was just known as the "rest" of the people. One thing the handout stated was that secular education was seen as unnecessary, but religious education was seen as critical for the mass of young poor people in France. One thing it said that I thought was cool was that Julie would take in all the information she knew and would share with other kids who didn't know. She could be looked at as a "teacher" and did this throughout her lifetime. I found it very sad when they said Julie had multiple sclerosis. The medicine treatment during this time period was not advanced at all. In all reality the treatments actually made people's sickness worse. One thing I found astonishing was that if you had a migraine they would drill a hole into your brain to try and relieve the pain. I am so glad that medicine in the 21st century is where it is at right now because just with the development of medicine lives are being saved that wouldn't of been saved during there time period.
