Ch.18 + Documents
This chapter is about Colonial Encounters in Asia and Africa. With the Industrial Revolution came many demands and productivity of materials and agriculture products. They needed to get wheat from the American Midwest and southern Russia, meat from Argentina, bananas from Central America, rubber from Brazil, cocoa and palm oil from West Africa, tea from Ceylon, and even gold and diamonds from South Africa. With all of these new demands came power from each country and the world had to rely on one another. In 1840 Britain was exporting 60% of its cotton production. They were selling annually 200 million yards to Europe, 300 million yards to Latin America, and 145 million yards to India. Europe didn't really offer Asian societies the right products they wanted to buy. Part of European and American fascination with Chine was evident back then and is still very evident now. You can see this when you look at the back of any products and it says "made in China". The lives of women in Africa were different then men. They were responsible for farming, planting, weeding, and getting the food together. On the other hand the men were responsible for clearing any land, building the houses, herding any animals they might of had and just hard work labor in the fields. Africa was con quested by many different groups that included the British, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Belgian, Spanish, and some independent African states.

In the documents they talk about seeking western education, the Indian rebellion, the Credits and Debits of British Rule in India, and finally Gandhi on Modern Civilization. I think the last document was the most interesting to me because Gandhi is a man that most people have heard about. He is known for his theories of satyagraha. He basically was the Martin Luther King Jr in India and stood up for political action that directly challenged and disobeyed the unjust laws.
Finally the visual sources in the documents are very controversial and can probably cause a lot of arguments. I know when i looked at the LE Cdant Marchand picture I felt very uneasy about it. The way he is stepping over the dead man on the ground and the fact that he is white and the people in the back are all African Americans doing what he is telling him what to do. I think this is a very wrong picture and I can't believe that these are some of the pictures out their during this time period.
