Ch. 23

This chapter is talking about a new phase of global interaction. It is interesting because Strayer starts off the chapter with a picture of the earth. This is different then the rest of the chapters because I feel like he is trying to tie this whole book together. I think he is trying to say that everything in life including history is tied and happens on earth and we all have that in common. No matter if you are from Europe, Africa, South America, Mexico, China, and many more places we all have one thing in common, we all live on earth. This is our earth and we need to take care of it the best we can because we only have one. This brings me to my next point when Strayer uses the word "Anthropocene era". what this is talking about is the human era. He talked about environmental movements have been starting since the 1960s to see how us humans are impacting the earth including animals and plants. There are three factors that magnified the human impact on earth's ecological system. They include the explosion of human numbers, energy potential of fossil fuels, and phenomenal economic growth. The worlds population quadrupled in a single century. We went from 1.6 billion people in 1900 to over 7 billion people in 2012, it is probably even higher now! The fossil fuels had to deal with coal in the 19th century and oil in the twentieth century. We added things like hydroelectricity, natural gas, and nuclear power.  The last one really coincides with the rest with having modern science and technology increasing the production of goods and services. Human impact is the main influence on the change to our planet but those three factors I mentioned above have an impact as well.
This chapter also talks about feminism and how it revived in the 1960s in Western Europe as well as the United States. In the twentieth century there was an international recognition for the view that, "women's rights are human rights." We still here this saying today because our world is slowly but surely trying to make strives to have equality for everyone. It was also declared in 1975 that is was the International Women's Year and the next ten years as the decade for women.

This chapter is about Colonial Encounters in Asia and Africa. With the Industrial Revolution came many demands and productivity of materials and agriculture products. Ch. 22

This chapter was about the end of the empire. It talked about the Global South on the Global stage from 1914 until present. Nelson Mandela was a South Africa's nationalist leader and believed in standing up to the power of the white domination and tried to free society so all people can live together in harmony and equal opportunity. I find it inspiring that he was prepared to die for what he believed in and he was so passionate about it he spent 27 years in prison. He lived in terrible conditions and was released in 1990. He became the first black African president in 1994 and he linked South Africa to dozens of other countries across Africa and Asia that were thrown off European rule in the second half of the 20th century. Ch. 14 Documents

The chapter fourteen documents start off by talking about the voices that were from the slave trade. It goes on to saying that it was an enormous enterprise and enormously significant in modern world history. This is important because that is what we are going to be talking about in this class. This slave trade took over four continents and spread throughout four centuries! There were millions of people involved. The first document they talk about is the life of Olaudah Equiano who was born in 1745 what is now known as Nigeria. He was taken from his home at the age of 11 and sold into the Atlantic Slave Trade. He was passed around between three different owners and was taught to read, write, travel as a seaman and finally bought his freedom in 1766. He then became a huge voice in the emerging abolitionist movement of the late 18th century.
