Ch. 21

In this chapter it was talking about revolution, socialism, and global conflict. This really hit on the rise and fall of world communism. Communism was a phenomenon of enormous significance in the world of the twentieth century. Karl Marx inspired modern communism and found the political and philosophical roots in the nineteenth century European socialism. By the 1970s almost one-third of the world's population lived in societies governed by the communist regimes. The most significant were the Soviet Union (world's largest country in size), and China (world's largest country in population). The Korean war took place in 1950 and ended in 1953. The U.S.-Vietnam War started in 1965 and ended in 1973. In 1917 the Russian communists came to power on the back of a revolutionary upheaval that happened within a year. This is a picture of Russia in 1917 and also during the first world war. This brought to power the first communist government and launched an international communist movement that eventually incorporated 1/3 of the worlds people.Image result for russia in 1917

China on the other hand had a prolonged revolutionary struggle. They struggled over decades and even collapsed in 1911. One thing very interesting is that during this time they "recruited" women. What this meant is the communist drew on a theoretical commitment to their liberation and established a Marriage Law that outlawed arranged or "purchased" marriages. This made divorce easier, and gave women the right to vote and own property. Being a woman in this day and age I don't have to worry about having a divorce be easy, having the right to vote or owning property. I think a lot of us don't really think about these struggles but we have to keep in mind what the women before us had to go through. That is why this Marriage Law was such a huge deal during this time period because it allowed the women to have more freedom! China during the era of Mao Zeodong had limitations, achievements, and tragedies. The total population went from 542 million people to 1 billion people. The overall life expectancy ranged anywhere from 35 to 65 years old. Now the life expectancy is around 85 years old. That is nearly 20 years more just from advancement in medicine and knowing how to take care of ones body.
